Can you book an Uber in Athens?
When it comes to travel plans, one of the main questions and things to arrange is the transportation from the airport to the hotel.
Uber is one of the most popular transportation services worldwide, available in more than 80 countries and 10,000 cities. So, it would make sense that international visitors to the Greek capital wonder whether Uber is available in Athens and what the alternatives are.
Technically, Uber exists in Greece.
However, there are certain restrictions and limitations that are worth knowing.
What Uber services are available in Athens?
Uber differentiates their services into various categories.
UberX – the standard or basic service
Uber Comfort – newer vehicles, more amenities, more legroom
Uber Taxi or Uber Cab – no personal vehicles, use local certified cab drivers
Uber Black – top-rated drivers and luxury vehicles
Uber Pet – vehicles that allow you to bring your pet along for the ride
Uber Connect – a delivery service that allows you to send parcels, gifts, or other items to people
As you can tell from this brief look into the different Uber options, there are a lot of choices.
Of note: not all of these options are available in each country or city.
In Athens, visitors with the Uber app can use the Uber Taxi service.
Until 2018, Uber also operated their UberX service in Athens.
Following massive protests from local taxi drivers and legal disputes, this is no longer the case.
What can you expect from Uber in Athens?
Uber Taxi is the same service provided by Uber where you can request a taxi using the app on your phone. All rides are metered and not fixed. It is not a ride-share, and the drivers are not using their own vehicles.
Can you use Uber Taxi from Athens airport?
Yes! You can reserve a ride from Athens Airport to your hotel using the Uber app up to 30 days before your flight.
What about other transportation services in Athens?
In addition to Uber Taxi, there are standard taxis that you can take from a taxi stand, called “piatsa” in Greek. Alternatively, you can hail one from the street. There is no Lyft in Athens or Greece in general.
A word of caution: There are many stories of foreign visitors overpaying for a ride that was not metered. To protect yourself and ensure a pleasant experience, you can check with a local about standard taxi prices, browse the “price list” usually available at the back of each cab, and ask for the meter to be turned on (in case it isn’t).
Another popular taxi service in recent years is the “Beat” app. It allows you to track your route, estimate the cost, and pay with your card.
What is the best way to get from Athens Airport to the city?
In addition to Uber Taxi and traditional yellow taxis, visitors can also use the metro or bus to go from the airport to the city.
The metro line departs approximately every 30 minutes and costs 10 euros per person for a one-way trip. It runs daily between 5 am and midnight.
There are also four express bus routes from Athens airport that cost around 5 euros per person per trip. The buses run 24 hours a day but with less frequent routes.
